Pioneers Of Juice Therapy
Today many people from the UK may know of a person or two that promotes juicing. I mean real Juicing of fresh organic vegetables and fruits. Unfortunately Most people don’t know the difference between buying a branded orange juice from the store and juicing fresh vegetables and oranges, and who can blame them? It seems that the people in charge of our great country, as well as those in charge of the USand just about every other country, never talk of the benefits of consuming fresh raw juices.
The first big name I heard about with regards to juicing was Jay Kordich. Jay has a great story of how he used juicing or juice therapy to over come cancer as a young man. He is now in his 80’s doing very well and has never looked back. Jay was well known and on TV allot and was known as ‘The Juice man’ after decades on TV jay seemed to disappear before fairly recently making a come back. Now ‘The Juice Daddy’ is once again on the surge along with his wife Linda. They are all over YouTube, selling a new juice machine that they helped design; they are bringing out new books and spreading the word once again.
It’s great to see them about and you can learn tons from these two very experienced juicers. Jay is the last real connection to the origins of juice therapy. Other great names such as Norman Walker, who many people regard as the founder of juicing and Dr max Gerson who really brought juicing to the masses as a medical tool, and Jay the Juice Daddy Kordich has worked with both of these men. Jay really is a wealth of knowledge and for me one of the pioneers of putting the message out to the masses. Below are some other people that have helped educate and promote juicing therapy to the masses :
Dr Norman Walker
Dr Norman walker was the original juice man. Born in 1886 Norman died in 1985 at the grand old age of 99 apparently in very good health and mental state. Dr Norman Walker First started squeezing the juice from fruits and vegetables around the early 1900’s after apparently noticing how much moisture was left on the underside of carrot peel and deciding to grid the peel down to remove the juice. From there, the rest as they say is history and after around 70 years or more of study he was still advocating the importance of fresh, raw, enzyme rich, nutrient dense foods and juice for health and longevity.
After moving to the US in 1910 from England, Dr Walker had various jobs but continued his pursuit of studying the effects of fresh juice. By the 1930’s Walker had formulated many specific combinations of fruit and vegetable juices to help restore the body and reverse many diseases. He opened a business selling fresh juices and delivering them to people’s homes around the same decade as well as designing his own juice machine, The Norwalk that is a two part juicer that first grinds the vegetables before then pressing them to release their juice. Some people still think this is one of the very best juice machines today in use today.
In the 1940’s Walker bought an old cotton mill and began using it as a juice plant but the local authorities clamped down on him and his unpasteurized juices (not for the first time in his career) so he sold his share of the mill and started his own publication with the aim of spreading the word on juicing and health. It was also in the 1940’s where Dr Walker met The Juice Daddy Jay Kordich after Jay had already used Juice therapy under the guidance of Dr Max Gerson to cure his bowel cancer. Jay and Dr Walker studied and worked together for the next four decades or so.
Dr Max Gerson
Born in Germany in 1881 Max Gerson first started using the power of juicing to combat headaches and migraines but soon moved on to other diseases after one of Gersons patients being treated for his migraines found that whilst using the therapy his tuberculosis cleared up.
After much success Gerson caught the attention of famed thoracic surgeon, Ferdinand Sauerbruch, M.D.
Under Sauerbruch’s supervision, Dr. Gerson established a special skin tuberculosis treatment program at the Munich University Hospital. In a carefully monitored clinical trial, 446 out of 450 skin tuberculosis patients treated with the Gerson diet recovered completely. Dr. Sauerbruch and Dr. Gerson simultaneously published articles in a dozen of the world’s leading medical journals, establishing the Gerson treatment as the first cure for skin tuberculosis.
Later Dr Gerson became known to Nobel Prize winner Albert Schweitzer, M.D., by curing Schweitzer’s wife of lung tuberculosis after all conventional treatments had failed. Gerson and Schweitzer remained friends for life, and maintained regular correspondence. Dr Gerson was having great success and in 1938, Dr. Gerson passed his boards and was licensed to practice in the state of New York. Apparently, for around twenty years, he treated hundreds of cancer patients who had been given up to die after all conventional treatments had failed.
In 1958 Dr Gerson had been getting much success but no where near enough recognition in the main stream medical fraternity and although successful, he was still thought of as having ‘radical’ ideas in that foods could help cure the body of disease. In 1958, after thirty years of clinical experimentation, Gerson published “A Cancer Therapy: Results of 50 Cases”. This medical monograph details the theories, treatment, and results achieved by a great physician. Gerson died in 1959 in suspicious circumstances having been said to have been poisoned with arsenic.
The Gerson was lives on in Max Gersons daughter Charlotte who now in her 80’s has been spreading the word since her father’s death. The Gerson therapy is probably the best known Cancer treatment in the world and includes lots of juicing of fresh vegetables and fruits but it is not solely a ‘Juice diet’ Still today the mainstream medical establishment do not accept the Gerson therapy or any other ‘alternative’ therapy as a possible was to help treat disease. Some people speculate that this is purely a matter of money, as the pharmaceutical companies that run the medical industry can’t make money if people are keeping themselves free from sickness or even curing themselves but eating and drinking fresh, whole foods. Charlotte has continued her relationship with Joy Kordich through out the years, rallying together to spread the message about juicing
Jay is the biggest promoter of juicing around today! As you have read above, Jay Kordich is a living legend in the Juicing world with so much knowledge having been around so long but also having worked with the genius founders of juicing.
Born in 1923 just outside San Diego, California In 1948 at the age of 25, Jay was diagnosed with a serious illness and was told he may not have long to live. After reviewing all the treatments available, he left California and traveled to New York City to see Dr. Max Gerson who was treating terminally ill patients with fresh raw juices and healthy cleansing diets. At that time I can only imagine how obscure this idea must have seemed, maybe even more so than today.
Jay became his patient and immediately began a regimen of large doses of raw carrot & apple juice. It wasn’t long before Jay’s health was restored and the direction of his life was changed forever. It is now 2012 and Jay is once again working hard to spread the word of juice therapy with his wife Linda. Striding into his 9th decade jay shows no signs of stopping what he is doing and since we lost the legend that is Jack lalane last year, Jay is now just about the only legend left from an era long gone. With every year Jay Strides through life with his legendary energy and enthusiasm for life and for juicing he is teaching us all how it’s done. Jay’s story is quite amazing and you should check out his work and contact Jay and Linda for the best tips for using juice therapy to improve your health
The health benefits of juicing vegetables and fruits have been know for a long time. People have used juicing as therapy for just about every type of ailment and this has been going on since the early 1900’s at the very least.
Pioneers such as Dr Norman Walker and Dr Max Gerson brought the therapeutic effects of squeezing the fresh juice containing valuable enzymes, vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, phyto nutrients and ‘life force’ from organic vegetables and fruits to the public. Fast forward to 2012 and there is many more thousands of people juicing and reaping the positive health benefits and even though juicing machines are now a fairly common kitchen appliance, there seems to be a divide in the juicing community with people fitting one of two categories.
There are people that seem to be the hard-core raw-food-vegans that swear by juicing and will not hear a single negative word said about it, and then there are the people that juice oranges and carrots because they taste good. These people receive a juicer for Christmas and by Easter the juicier is sitting on the kitchen counter gathering dust awaiting the inevitable journey back into it’s box and then back into the cupboard with the only glimmer of hope being a possible transaction being made on Ebay giving life to possibly another few weeks of use! The other extreme view within the nutrition industry comes from the paleo/body-building/keto crowd that say that juicing is just sugar water and serves no benefit outside of a few vitamins and minerals that you can get from eating the odd bath of broccoli any way.
With all that said, the full potential health benefits of juicing are lost of many people and cleansing, healing powers of those dark green not-so-nice-tasting juices are never realised. Despite the extremists opinion, there is, as always, a middle ground. You can be a paleo type, high protein body-building type person and still realise and utilize the powerful health benefits of juicing as you will see if you stick around.

The Health benefits of Juicing fruits and vegetables are huge!
We must however treat it like every thing else in life, responsible.Does that Sound stupid? what harm can extracting a little juice from plants do us?
Many people juice nothing but carrots. some juice only nice fruits, oranges, grapefruits, melon, grapes etc. All of the above, in moderation can nurish the body with powerful, vital nutrients and anti oxidants that can protect us from disease, ad help fight free radicals. However, they also contain lots of sugar
People that are diabetic need to be aware that fruit juices like this need to be consumed with care. People trying to loose fat, people with yeast problems and pancreas problems, all need to know what they are doing before beginning.
Juicing can be an effective to loose unwanted fat, nourish the body, heal us, and cleanse. Juicing is not for every one. Most people enjoy the sweetness of fruit juices or carrots.
These all contain vitamins, minerals, anti oxidants etc that our bodies need and thank us for, however, they also contain high amounts of sugar that raise our blood sugar levels fast. If you are diabetic, or suffer from Candida, thrush or if you are trying to loose fat, then you should stick mostly to vegetable juice, or well timed juices E.G. if you are trying to loose fat, then drinking carrot juice all day is not going to be good, but after a good 45 minute to 60 minute work out with weights, your body will thank you for it, especially if you add some BCAA’s to it, or protein powder.
There are also some other things to consider. Not starting off with too much juice is one, or too much dark green juice from broccoli, cabbage and the like, because this can be very potent and may cause stomach discomfort and upset.
Juicing certain things like ginger or grapefruit may not be good for you if your on certain medication, as they may enhance the strength of the drugs greatly.
There are allot of things to consider, and we hope to provide you with some good information, articles and web sites to help you juice safely and enjoy the many benefits of raw fruit and veg juice! Responsible juicing — what is it?
Responsible juicing is what juicingbook.com is all about. But, what does this mean to you?
Well, quite honestly, it means you need to juice in a non–reckless way. You need to become aware of what you are doing when you juice and what impact it can have on the body.
Unfortunately, there have been a lot of infomercials, books and other promotional tools which only purpose is to sell a juicer rather than to promote responsible juicing. These infomercials, as an example, make juicing look exciting and fun. To be quite honest, responsible juicing is boring and dull.
The problem with the infomercials that make juicing exciting and fun is that their only purpose is to sell juicers. Not only is it their job to sell juice machines, but to sell as many as they can and as quick as they can. The result can be information that doesn’t promote responsible juicing.
Responsible juicing is important because when you juice, you are drinking concentrated nutrition. In a way, you are drinking a herbal concoction when you drink fresh juice. This is because herbal medicine works by providing your body with nutrition. It is the nutrition in the herbs that helps your body heal, recover and stay healthy.
If you juice irresponsibly then you can potentially overwhelm your body with nutrition causing you to stimulate something in your body too much, feel not so good, create negative effects, etc. Nutrition is fuel for the body and it is said that the difference between medicine and poison is all in the dose:
“All things are poison and nothing is without poison. It is the dose that makes a thing poisonous.”
Paracelsus, 16th century pharmacologist
Many people, when trying wheatgrass for the first time, drink too much and then get a headache. I know because I experienced this headache the first time I drank wheatgrass juice, as have many others. But I thought to myself — “What am I doing? A headache is a sign that I am drinking too much wheatgrass causing my body to detoxify faster than it is capable of eliminating the toxins. A headache is not what I want. I want to experience positive benefits, not negative.”
When we juice, we do not want to juice recklessly and with abandonment of good, wholesome common sense. We do not want to overwhelm our body with nutrition. Instead, we simply want to provide our body with extra, easily assimilated nutrition.
Ultimately, we want to become consciously aware of the power that the vegetables and fruits can and do have on our body. Certain vegetables can have profound affects. For example, celery is a natural diuretic as is parsley. Dandelion leaves really stimulate the liver. Beets can move your bowels in a way you never knew was possible. If you juice these and other vegetables or fruits in an irresponsible manner then you will be doing your body no favours and instead of experiencing the positive benefits, you will be experiencing negative benefits.
Coming from Canada, a place with lots of wildlife, I am reminded of an interesting statistic — believe it or not, but more people are killed every year in Canada by deer rather than by bears! But how could this be considering that deer are herbivores (vegetarians) while bears are omnivores (eat everything and anything).
Well here’s why more people die from deer attacks — people think that because deer are herbivores that they can walk up and pet them. But this is a wrong thought and belief. While a herbivore, such as a deer, may only eat vegetation they can and do kill for protection. So the deer, seeing the human as a potential threat, uses their antlers to stab the human. Now granted, the deer won’t eat the human like a bear potentially would, but the human is now dead because the human saw the deer as a cute and friendly vegetarian eating animal and underestimated its true capabilities. The human was blind as to why the deer had antlers — for protection.
Bears, because they are known for their strength, power and ability to hunt and kill, are avoided by most humans. When a bear sees a human, the bear will usually walk away and the human will do the same.
How does this all apply to juicing? Well, responsible juicing means you don’t underestimate the power of the vegetables and fruits you juice — just as you should not underestimate the deer. It’s so obvious that you should avoid the bear, but not so obvious that you should avoid the deer more so than the bear.
Vegetables and fruits seem so innocent, but always remember — the difference between poison and medicine is in the dose.
While many that sell juicers and juice machine may make juicing sound exciting and a miracle cure for all that ails you, I could not, in good consciousness tell you this is the case. Juicing is part of a healthy lifestyle when done responsibly. Juicing is not the cure, but rather part of the solution.
“Let thy medicine by thy food and thy food be thy medicine.”
Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine
When juicing responsibly, we become aware of the amount of sugar in the juice we are drinking. Juicing responsibly means you emphasize vegetable juices and only juice fruits occasionally as a treat or as needed.
Juicing responsibly means you generally focus more on vegetables that grow above ground rather than below ground. The vegetables that grow below ground are higher in sugar content than those that grow above ground.
Juicing responsibly means you do not stop eating food.
Juicing responsibly means you don’t expect juicing to cure you but rather realize it’s part of the solution and not the solution itself.
Juicing responsibly means you don’t drink too much juice too fast. Instead your start slow and juicing responsibly means you do not become fanatical nor do you juice with a kamikaze attitude.
Juicing responsibly means you become aware of good food combining and don’t mix fruits with vegetables.
Juicing responsibly means nothing more than common sense.
Juicing responsibly means you might only drink half a pint (200 mL) of vegetable juice daily. While this might sound like common sense, I have received multiple emails over the years of people who are drinking 2 pints (1 liter) or more a day and to make things worse, the people are primarily drinking only fruit juice which is high in sugar.
When purchasing a juicer, I tell people to be cautious of the information and recipes provided with the juicer because the information usually promotes irresponsible juicing rather than responsible juicing.
Few people are aware, as an example, that juicing while pregnant can actually cause your newborn problems. Why might this be? Because while the mother is carrying the child, if she juices, then the fetus is getting extra nutrition. First, this nutrition can be too much of a certain vitamin or mineral which could possibly cause harm. But more importantly, it can also cause the newborn child to become nutritionally deficient fast. Studies have shown, as an example, that a mother who takes a lot of vitamin C while pregnant may give birth to a child who then suffers from scurvy. Why would this happen? Because once born, the child is getting less vitamin C than it is used to causing it to be vitamin C deficient.
Responsible juicing is the approach I like to encourage. When you juice responsibly, then you don’t overload the body and instead, you allow the body to work gently and smoothly
