WI judge declares that individuals have no fundamental right to own cows, drink raw milk

NaturalNews) After being petitioned for clarification about his decision in a recent legal case involving individuals freedom to consume raw milk and own “shares” of dairy cows, Judge Patrick J. Fiedler vehemently declared that individuals “do not have a fundamental right to consume the foods of their choice,” and essentially reiterated his state’s position that raw milk is simply off limits.

The Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund (FTCLDF), on behalf of Zinniker Family Farm in Elkhorn, Wi., and several other farms, filed a lawsuit against the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) back on Feb. 25, 2010, asking it to clarify its interpretation of the law in regards to raw milk (http://www.ftcldf.org/litigation-wi…).

Wisconsin is among the most restrictive US states as far as raw milk is concerned. Raw milk sales to consumers are prohibited — but private cow share agreements in which individuals purchase “shares” of their own cows, are exempted. However, due to the onslaught of raids in recent years against raw dairies, private raw milk buying clubs, and even raw milk cow share programs, the plaintiffs simply wanted to clarify Wisconsin’s stance concerning these alternate forms of accessing raw milk.

And they got their answer. According to a recent report by The Complete Patient, Judge Fiedler believes that no individual has a “fundamental right” to consume any food without government permission. Even though the Ninth Amendment to the US Constitution establishes that the government has no business interfering in the affairs of individuals outside of what has been specifically enumerated to it, which, of course, includes freedom of food choice, Judge Fiedler apparently believes otherwise.

To summarize Judge Fiedler’s response, which was obviously written in an arrogant and condescending tone, individuals have no fundamental right to own or use dairy cows, to consume the milk from their own cows, to board their cows off their own property, or even to produce and consume the foods of their own choice, period.

Groups like FTCLDF will continue to challenge such illegal and unconstitutional restrictions against raw milk, particularly in individual states like Wisconsin where officials have illegally prohibited it. Popular Colorectal Cancer Drug May Cause Permanent Nerve Damage, Study Suggests

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2011) — Oxaliplatin, a platinum-based anticancer drug that’s made enormous headway in recent years against colorectal cancer, appears to cause nerve damage that may be permanent and worsens even months after treatment ends. The chemotherapy side effect, described by Johns Hopkins researchers in the September issue of Neurology, was discovered in what is believed to be the first effort to track oxaliplatin-based nerve damage through relatively cheap and easy punch skin biopsies.

The Johns Hopkins investigators emphasize that the drug therapy clearly improves length of survival in advanced cancer by months to years, and that the goal of their new study is to find ways of preventing or slowing the damage through nerve-protective therapies identfied through simple skin testing.

Many patients who take oxaliplatin report bothersome neurological side effects, including pain in the hands and feet and a numbness or tingling in the throat that affects swallowing, according to study leader Michael Polydefkis, M.D., M.H.S., associate professor of neurology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and director of the EMG Laboratory and Cutaneous Nerve Laboratory at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Though these symptoms develop over time in the majority of patients, some report neuropathies as early as when the drug is first infused.

To get a better sense of how oxaliplatin affects nerve cells, Polydefkis and his colleagues recruited eight cancer patients about to begin oxaliplatin treatment at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. All had been diagnosed with advanced colon cancer.

Before their first oxaliplatin infusion, each patient underwent a comprehensive neurological examination, including nerve conduction testing, a clinical exam to look for signs of nerve damage, and a punch biopsy that removed tiny (3-mm diameter) portions of skin near their knees and ankles. Once oxaliplatin treatment began, consisting of infusions over two days once every two weeks for 12 cycles, the researchers performed the same tests after 30, 90 and 180 days. Another 180 days after they finished with treatment, the patients received one final exam.

Test results showed that each of the patients’ nerve function and neuropathy symptoms worsened over time and that results from the punch skin biopsies neatly mirrored the side effect arc. Using a microscope, the researchers saw that nerve cells’ long extensions, called axons, degenerated over the course of oxaliplatin therapy. This progression persisted after treatment stopped. Even 180 days after their last doses, seven out of the eight patients’ axons continued to wither.

“This drug has rapidly become the standard of care for people with advanced colon cancer, but we really knew little about how oxaliplatin affects nerves over time,” he says. “With people living longer lives on oxaliplatin, it’s important to know more about these neurological side effects so patients and their physicians can make educated choices on how this drug is used, and perhaps suggest ways to limit the damage.”

The new study strongly suggests that punch skin biopsies could be an easy and inexpensive way to follow nerve cell degeneration, a crucial prerequisite for testing the effectiveness of drugs currently in development to trace, prevent or slow nerve damage.

“Skin biopsies can be done pretty easily, uniformly and cheaply anywhere, including hospitals, doctors’ offices and clinics, and those places can have the tissue sent to Hopkins for analysis,” Polydefkis says. “High-quality neurological testing isn’t nearly as easy or economical to do, so it’s possible that the biopsies could play a pivotal role in bringing neuroprotective drugs to fruition.”

Zinc found critical within the brain to improve memory and cognition

By artificially regulating the level of zinc in the brain of the test animals, researchers were able to confirm that eliminating zinc from the neural vesicles also prevented enhanced communication. By increasing levels of the mineral, they were able to significantly restore enhanced communications in the hippocampal region to improve learning and memory capabilities.

The results of this study conducted on mice can be extrapolated to humans because zinc is known to play a similar role in the brain of both species. Zinc deficiency in the typical western diet is rapidly becoming a serious problem that threatens human health. Due to poor farming practices and the abundance of nutrient-deprived processed foods, many children and adults suffer from a chronic insufficiency of the mineral.

Over time, lack of zinc from dietary sources can result in immune system depression, decline in sexual health and increased risk of dementia and cognitive decline. India files biopiracy lawsuit against Monsanto, says biotech giant is stealing nature for corporate gain

And in an attempt to capitalize on this popular crop, Monsanto has repeatedly tried to commercially market its own GM variety of brinjal called Bt brinjal. But massive public outcry against planned commercial approval of Monsanto’s “frankencrop” variety in 2010 led to the government banning it for an indefinite period of time.

But Monsanto is still stealing native crops, including brinjal, and quietly working on GM varieties of them in test fields, which is a clear violation of India’s Biological Diversity Act (BDA). So at the prompting of various farmers and activists in India, the Indian government, representing the first time in history a nation that has taken such action, has decided to sue Monsanto.

“This can send a different message to the big companies for violating the laws of the nation,” said K.S. Sugara, Member Secretary of the Karnataka Biodiversity Board, to France 24 concerning the lawsuit. “It is not acceptable … that the farmers in our communities are robbed of the advantage they should get from the indigenous varieties.”

Low vitamin B12 levels in elders cause brain shrinkage and possible dementia

NaturalNews) When elders have cognitive problems, like forgetting things, and when imaging tests show their brains are actually shrinking, the diagnosis is often a hopeless one — some form of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. But what if the problem in a lot of these people is simply a lack of a nutrient? That may well be the case. According to researchers at Rush University Medical Center, older people with low blood levels of vitamin B12 markers appear to be more likely to have lower brain volumes and problems with thinking skills when compared to other people the same age who aren’t B12 deficient. Their new study, just published in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, involved 121 elders living in the south side of Chicago who are a part of the Chicago Health and Aging Project (CHAP), a large, ongoing prospective study. CHAP is comprised of a biracial group of 10,000 subjects over the age of 65. Research subjects for the Rush University research included 121 participants from CHAP who had blood drawn to measure levels of vitamin B12 and B12-related markers that can indicate a B12 deficiency. The same people were also given tests to measure their memory and other thinking skills. The B-12 deficiency link to brain changes After approximately four-and-a-half years, participants brains were scanned with MRIs to measure total brain volume and to check for other signs of brain damage. The results showed that the elders who had high levels of four to five markers for vitamin B12 deficiency also had the lowest scores on the cognitive tests. They had smaller brain volumes, too, indicating that their brains had suffered actual shrinkage. Christine C. Tangney, PhD, associate professor in the department of clinical nutrition at Rush University Medical Center, and lead author of the study, explained in a media statement that low vitamin B12 can be difficult to detect in older people when looking only at blood levels of the vitamin. That’s why the research team relied on other markers for B12 deficiency, including homocysteine. The scores on the cognitive tests the reseach subjects took ranged from -2.18 to 1.42, with an average of 0.23. For each increase of one micromole per liter of homocysteine (the more homocysteine, the less B12 in the body),the cognitive scores decreased by 0.03 standardized units or points. In the press statement, the researchers pointed out these findings back up another British trial that documented a link between B vitamin supplementation and cognitive skills. “Our findings lend support for the contention that poor vitamin B12 status is a potential risk factor for brain atrophy and may contribute to cognitive impairment,” Dr. Tangney stated. Yaupon holly offers antioxidant benefits, caffeine

Good Night’s Sleep May Reduce Risk of Type 2 Diabetes in Obese Teens

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2011) — Obese teenagers who don’t get the proper amount of sleep may have disruptions in insulin secretion and blood sugar (glucose) levels, say pediatric researchers. Their study suggests that getting a good night’s sleep may stave off the development of type 2 diabetes in these adolescents.

“We already know that three out of four high school students report getting insufficient sleep,” said study investigator Dorit Koren, M.D., a pediatric endocrinologist at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “Our study found to keep glucose levels stable, the optimal amount of sleep for teenagers is 7.5 to 8.5 hours per night.” She added that this is consistent with research in adults showing an association between sleep deprivation and increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

The study appears online in the journal Diabetes Care.

The researchers studied 62 obese adolescents with a mean age of 14 years at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Over one and a half days, the children, who were white, African American and Hispanic teenagers, underwent glucose testing and an overnight sleep study. In addition to measuring total sleep time, the scientists studied “sleep architecture,” analyzing stages of sleep such as slow-wave “deep” sleep and rapid eye movement (dream) sleep.

The optimal sleep duration was neither too little nor too much, said Koren; both insufficient and excessive sleep were linked to higher glucose levels. While sleep stages did not predict glucose levels, lower duration of N3 (“deep” sleep) correlated with decreased insulin secretion.

The current study was the first to associate sleep duration with glucose levels in children and to report a link between N3 sleep and insulin secretion.

“Reduced insulin secretion may lead to the higher glucose levels that we found in subjects who had insufficient sleep,” said Koren. “We will seek to confirm these findings with home-based studies of sleep patterns in obese teenagers. In the meantime, our study reinforces the idea that getting adequate sleep in adolescence may help protect against type 2 diabetes.”

Funding support for the study came from the Pennsylvania State Tobacco Settlement Fund and the National Center for Research Resources, (part of the National Institutes of Health). Koren’s co-authors were Lorraine E. Levitt Katz, M.D., Paul R. Gallagher, M.A., Robert I. Berkowitz, M.D., and Lee J. Brooks, M.D., all of Children’s Hospital; and Preneet C. Prescription drugs responsible for more deaths than traffic accidents, study finds

And since as little as one percent of drug-induced injuries and deaths are even reported in the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) adverse event tracking system, the actual number of drug deaths is likely far higher than what has been publicly released. Citrus BioFlavonoids are a powerful defense against oxidative stress
